Other People's Scores Are None of Your Business
Someone on r/SAT posts that they went from a 1200 to a 1560 in six weeks studying four hours a day. The comments fill with people recalculating their own timelines. Two things are almost certainly true about that post: the person is telling the truth as they experienced it, and it tells you almost nothing useful about your own situation.
Why Score Stories Skew High
Social media self-selection is not subtle. People who hit their target score post about it. People who studied hard and landed 80 points below where they hoped mostly stay quiet. This is not cynicism β it's a documented pattern in how online communities form around high-stakes outcomes. Add to that the tutoring industry, where client testimonials are curated by definition, and the numbers floating around the internet represent the optimistic tail of the distribution, not the middle of it. When College Board releases official score data, it shows the actual distribution of SAT scores across test-takers β and dramatic single-attempt leaps are real but uncommon, not the baseline expectation. The digital SAT (current format as of 2024, section-adaptive across Reading/Writing and Math modules) has only a couple years of public score data so far, making before-and-after comparisons even noisier than usual.
The Schedule You Can Actually Keep Beats the Schedule That Looks Impressive
Bjork's research on desirable difficulties and Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve both point in the same direction: retention depends on consistent, spaced exposure over time, not volume in a short window. A student doing 45 focused minutes four days a week for three months will, on average, retain more than someone doing three-hour cramming sessions the week before the test β assuming the 45-minute sessions involve active retrieval practice rather than passive re-reading. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 research found that testing yourself on material produces substantially better long-term retention than restudying it. That matters for the SAT, GRE, or any other exam where you need skills available under pressure, not just fresh in short-term memory.
What this means practically: the six-hours-a-day story you read on Reddit probably isn't replicable for someone with a full course load, a job, or caregiving responsibilities. That doesn't mean you're at a disadvantage by default β it means your schedule needs to fit your actual life, not someone else's highlight reel.
Your Only Meaningful Benchmark Is Your Last Practice Test
Comparing your score to a stranger's score online conflates too many variables to be useful:
- Starting point (a 1400 jumping to 1560 requires different work than a 1050 jumping to 1220)
- Which content areas were weak and by how much
- Quality of practice materials used
- Whether "practice tests" were timed, full-length, and official
- What was happening in that person's life during prep
None of that context travels with the score. Your own previous practice test, taken under realistic conditions using official materials (College Board's Bluebook app for digital SAT, ETS's PowerPrep for the section-adaptive GRE), tells you something concrete: where you are now, which question types cost you points, and whether your error patterns are consistent. That's actionable. A stranger's Reddit score is not.
What "Progress" Actually Looks Like
Score gains on standardized tests are not linear, and this is worth knowing before you start. Many students see relatively quick early gains as they close familiarity gaps with format and question types, then hit a slower phase where deeper skill-building is required. If your scores plateau after initial improvement, that's normal, not a signal that you've hit your ceiling. It's also worth acknowledging honestly: some score gaps are harder to close than others, prep time has diminishing returns past a point that varies by person, and test prep is one variable among many in admissions or qualification processes.
The most concrete thing you can do this week: take one full-length, timed official practice test under realistic conditions, score it carefully, and write down the three question types where you lost the most points. That data belongs to you and actually applies to you. Use that instead.
